After an outstanding event last year with almost 50 veterans participating, the “Great Gun Moriches Anglers” will be hosting its 5th annual “Take a Vet Fishing” on Saturday, July 27th, 2024. The Great Gun Moriches Anglers is a local fishing club in the Moriches area with over 70 members currently. Our mission is to promote conservation of our local marine resources through responsible fishing and recreational activities throughout the Moriches Bay and Moriches Inlet areas, while also giving back to the community. Our Take a Vet Fishing event was introduced by Great Gun Moriches Angler’s current President, Evan Goldstein, several years ago. After seeing a similar event in Florida, Evan introduced the idea to the club, and it was overwhelmingly supported and added to its schedule of events for the year. “What better way to honor and thank our local Veterans, both former and present, for their service and sacrifice”.
The event kicks off with an 8:00AM registration and sign in. Note, the club is also working on electronic registration through its Facebook Page. We are hoping to have this in place for the event. Please join our page to receive the latest club and event information.
After registration, the Veterans are assigned a boat and captain. These boats all come from club members and local volunteers with no cost to the Veterans. Further, all bait and gear is also provided to the anglers at no cost by Hart’s Cove Bait and Tackle, L and L Wholesale Bait (https://www.llbait.com) and Charlie Prott. The Veterans are then treated to a full day out on Moriches Bay to enjoy some fishing, fun, stories and hopefully some sunshine. Past catches have included everything from fluke, sea robins, striped bass, bluefish and even 200 lb. plus sharks. At 3:00PM it’s back to Center Moriches’ Union Ave. Brooklyn Dock for a well-deserved BBQ. “At the BBQ, comradery and stories of the day’s fishing are shared and enjoyed.
The club members also get to meet with the other veterans, hear their stories and ultimately thank them for their service. This is our club’s way of showing our appreciation to the people who have given us all the opportunity to pursue our wonderful way of life.
Our club has now sponsored this event for the past 4 years in a row and we look to continue the tradition well into the future. Each year the number of attendees continues to grow. We are hoping to have 100 Veterans participating within the next few years.
